Sonja Sinclair-Elechi

I joined Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) in 1995 and quickly recognised the unseen emotional impact that critical incidents have on those who serve. While our teams are trained for physical danger, the psychological toll is often hidden and I became determined to build a culture where mental health is openly acknowledged and supported.

In 2005, I founded the Critical Incident Support Team, providing trauma support and structured debriefing after high-impact events. In 2018, I expanded this work by establishing the Welfare Team, offering dedicated support for colleagues facing stress, anxiety, and wellbeing challenges. The success of these initiatives led to me being honoured with a Fire Service King’s Award for my contribution to mental health support. I continue to champion a compassionate, proactive approach to wellbeing, ensuring those who protect others are never left to face emotional challenges alone.
